How our sellers cracked Digital India

G+1

Indian sellers, with differing goals, backgrounds and strengths, cashed in on the potential of e-commerce to create a name for themselves, by moving past geographical boundaries, to crack Digital India.

How does one determine the pace at which India is progressing? The people of the country illustrate the same, the best. One part of Incredible India that has evolved into something bigger in the past few years is Digital India. If you’re reading this article, you’re a part of it.

There has been a gradual yet prominent transition from ‘offline’ to ‘online’ that has seeped into the smallest villages & cities alike. Whether it’s the cab driver who stops on the road side to attend a call or your favourite eating joint whose pamphlet reads, “Give us a great review online!”, modes of communication have come a long way indeed.

One such sector that has gone beyond all expectation is e-commerce. On Snapdeal itself, over 2 lac sellers from various corners in India are reaching out to customers from both towns & villages. To the three sellers, this transition was about finding an innovative solution to a small, local problem or a valuable addition to the lives of their fellow city folk.

So who are these hard working Indians one could look up to as inspiration?

These are just three of the countless success stories that have made their contribution to Digital India’s ever growing success. Irrespective of geographical location, language barriers, Snapdeal is thus a platform that provides everyone with the opportunity to steer their business in a lucrative direction. Once you’re on board Snapdeal like these three individuals did, there will be no stopping you.

Gaurav Goel, an electronics retailer from Kolkata used to run 7 stores with a massive distribution network. However, he felt the need to spread word about his stores to create recognition in the market. Considering expanding his business, he clicked open the e-commerce route and decided to bring his products on Snapdeal. Despite no prior knowledge of the dynamics of e-commerce, Gaurav was able to transform and upscale his business.

On day 1 of trading online, his inventory had sold out by the end of the day. The next day, orders had multiplied and he was sending out goods at the rate of 600-700 boxes a day. The absence of a warehouse however, was preventing him from expanding his business. That’s when Gaurav decided to turn to Snapdeal Plus. The Snapdeal warehouse would stock the inventory, accept orders, package and dispatch items. They even created invoices – thus letting Gaurav focus entirely on manufacturing, and eventually, product diversification. All of this created an environment conducive to growing his business seamlessly. Then on, there’s been nothing stopping him.

Snapdeal thus strives to enable individuals to transform their creative talents into flourishing businesses. Out of the many success stories is that of Aarti Goel, a home furnishings designer from New Delhi. Running a small in-house boutique as a hobby, Aarti used to design & create bed covers and bed sheets.

For Aarti, household work simply wouldn’t suffice; she yearned to go beyond her mundane routine and let her talents earn her recognition. That’s when she decided to come on board Snapdeal and sell her furnishings there.

Doubtlessly, her decision also received opposition, but Aarti had forgotten how to settle. She went looking for fabrics & embellishments in Chandni Chowk, one of Delhi’s congested markets. A set of 5 balloon coloured cushions designed initially by her received a phenomenal response online. After that, she only raised the bar higher.

Bringing her products on Snapdeal allowed Aarti to reach potential customer clusters that a store in Chandni Chowk could simply never have reached. Soon enough, Aarti had a multi floor store, one for management, one for production and one for packaging. Keeping the monetary growth aside, Aarti’s greatest reward was the feeling of achievement that came from crafting something with her own hands. In addition to being a home maker, today Aarti efficiently runs a lucrative business. ‘Now everybody knows me for what I am,’ she says, beaming.

Yet another life changing impact e-commerce has, stems from its ability to uncover talents from the most hidden corners of our country. Balaji Rajendran belonged to a family of saree manufacturers from Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. Having worked as a successful IT professional for a long time, he sought to start his own saree business that would operate across India.

Seeing the potential of the booming e-commerce industry, Balaji decided to approach Snapdeal. They helped him create a catalogue of his sarees and even helped with marketing his products. Balaji’s first online sale came from New Delhi and his confidence soared. After all, how often does an indigenous seller from Tamil Nadu manage to strike a deal at the other end of the country?

Balaji’s saree business today comprises kids wear and t-shirts. Within just 1.5 years of entering the e-commerce arena, Balaji has become more successful than he was at his desk job. With time, his dreams have only grown bigger. He is now considering growing his business tenfold, and with the rapid growth that the Indian digital selling space is experiencing, it’s certainly not a long way to go for him.
